I tested 4 different devices for my mom before choosing one. What decided it wasn’t technical.

A number keypad was easy for me to prototype with, but the keys were small, and nothing about it said “call someone.” A small programmable button pad could show faces, but they were still hard to see. A conventional corded phone felt familiar. But she’d still have to remember which number calls which person, or keep a cheat sheet next to it. So, for now, I’ve landed on a phone with big photo buttons: a face she recognizes, on something that looks like the landline she used for years. What I took away: for someone who finds technology hard, familiar beats minimal. A sleek device she doesn’t recognize can be harder to use than one she’s known for years. The video walks through each option. Next step is putting it in front of her. That’s the real test, and I’ll share how it goes.
