Day two of Origin CodeShield: from idea to private beta

By Paul Yorke

Build log, day two. Origin CodeShield is a small tool I built to answer one question: has someone copied my front-end code? It came out of a real case where I spotted a site that looked a lot like something I'd built. What it does today: - You fingerprint your own JavaScript and TypeScript. - A Chrome extension scans a website and compares its scripts against your fingerprints, including minified production builds. - It can also search GitHub for possible matches. - Your source code stays on your computer. The comparison runs locally. How it got built: I wrote it with Claude, and the first working version took about an hour. Day two it went into private beta. It runs on Firebase's free plan, so it has cost me £0 so far. What went wrong: a one-letter bug in the betaTesters check. Small typo, real time lost. Its limits, so nobody is surprised: - It can miss obfuscated code and anything that runs server-side. - A match is a lead to look into, not proof of copying. - Chrome only for now. Next: getting it in front of a small group of beta testers and seeing what they actually find. The full write-up is here: https://x.com/oimatrixioYT/status/2113041638708625674 If you want to try it, the private beta is open: https://origincodeshield.originforgestudio.co.uk/
