My mom has advanced Parkinson’s and dementia.

By Ethan Teng

Over the last few years, the phone has become something she can’t really use. Her hands are slow and stiff. She forgets where it is. Often, it isn’t charged. People call, but they can’t reach her. My brother and I live close by, so we see her a lot. But her siblings live in another state. For them, losing the phone means losing the way they stayed in touch. So I’m building something for my mom. It’s called HelloPorch. Think of a landline with speed dial, but with video. One big physical button starts a video call. When her loved ones call, it answers automatically for her. I’m trying to make it feel familiar and easy, with as little for her to remember as possible. This video shows what I’m working on and why. If your loved one is having a hard time using a phone, send me a message or leave a comment. I’d love to hear what’s getting in the way and see whether HelloPorch could be useful for your family.
