I am listening to Venture Deals Be Smarter Than Your Lawyer And Venture Capitalist by Brad Feld and Jason Mendelson, Ascent Audio, 2011. I am enjoying listening to this. It is oriented towards people in practice and is not theoretical. It was recommended in the Reddit forum r/venturecapital. There is a lot about negotiations. Lawyers, and term sheet. I am using Hoopla which is a content service from my library to listen to this. I have the application on my smart phone.
I have also started reading Secrets of Sandhill Road Venture Capital and How To Get It by Scott Kupor, Managing Partner At Andreessen Horowitz. Penguin, 2019. I have too many things which I have started reading right now. This is another book which I found on Reddit. I have a pile of three hardcover books and some audiobooks to read. I am learning that it is easier to get technology credits and free help than cash if you start a technology business. I have gotten quite a bit of different types of free help including website design and review, usability testing, product reviews, advertising, and other things. This seems to be something that is readily available through organizations like SCORE or SBDC, as well as companies who just want to test out their skills. This has led to a number of minor improvements to my web site. I also learned that as soon as you start getting free technology credits for your company, other companies figure it out and start giving you more technology credits. I am getting phone calls now pitching me to try out new technology. Places like Credit For Startups have long lists of available technology to test out for new startups. I am talking to Google Cloud on Monday, October 12. I got credit from Amazon Web Services on October 5. I also got credit from MongoDB, Posthog, and Mixpanel. I have applied to 53 different places for a mix of capital and grants. About half of them have already rejected me. It is easy to get advice and technology credits, but not cash.
