My AWS cost tool was paying for its own test waste
By Rick Wise
CloudWise finds wasted AWS spend. When I finally ran a proper audit of its own AWS bill, the biggest single leak was mine. To test the detector for idle Lambda provisioned concurrency, I created a test function with 5 GB of provisioned concurrency. The test passed. The function stayed. It sat there for over two months at about $54 a month, doing nothing, and startup credits hid it the whole time. What I changed: 1. Test waste is created and destroyed in the same session, by the same tool. If a script can create it, that script has to clean it up. 2. Every test resource is tagged, and a sweep lists anything with that tag that is still alive. 3. I read the bill with credits filtered out. Credits make a bill look like $0, so nothing looks wrong until they run out. Mine ran out. After cutting the bill from about $278 to about $117 a month, that $117 is now cash. If you're on credits right now: in Cost Explorer, exclude the Credit charge type once and look at the real number.
