Lesson
My mom kept trying to press buttons that weren’t there.
By Ethan Teng
I was watching her use HelloPorch for the first time. The big picture buttons were right in front of her, but she kept looking for buttons on the receiver. My guess is she was thinking of a cordless phone, where the buttons are on the handset. Picking it up felt familiar, but then it kept tripping her up. So I detached the receiver entirely. She doesn’t need it for the video call anyway. That helped her focus on the big picture buttons instead. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to make HelloPorch feel familiar to her. Watching her actually use it showed me something I hadn’t thought of: the phone I had in mind might be different from the one she had in mind. This time, making it easier meant taking something away. #HelloPorch #Parkinsons #dementia #accessibledesign #buildinpublic

i love how meticulous you are about this product and have the "perfect" user (bless her) to improve it for.
