The short answer

Choose a founder community by checking the exact destination, contribution, and requested action against its current rules. Public progress posts, designated feedback threads, ready-to-try showcases, and private peer discussions serve different purposes. Helpful tone and a relevant audience do not establish permission to promote or recruit.

Choose a founder community by checking whether it permits the specific work you want to share and the action you want readers to take. A public progress update, a product feedback request, a launch demonstration, and a private operating question can belong in different places. Helpful wording alone does not establish permission to post.

For a SaaS founder building in public, this changes the comparison. You need somewhere to explain continuing decisions, somewhere appropriate to ask for help, and perhaps a separate place to show a usable release. A community can be valuable even when it restricts product promotion. It can also be unsuitable for your planned public record despite having relevant members.

This guide compares documented participation contexts checked on October 27, 2026. The routing method and fictional example are editorial analysis. No posts were submitted and no community membership experience is claimed.

Compare the exact place where your update would appear

Start with the destination inside the community: your founder update, an ordinary discussion, a pinned feedback thread, a showcase, or a private channel. Rules for one surface do not automatically apply to another. Record the destination alongside the platform name before comparing candidates.

Then separate three questions. Is the subject relevant? Is this kind of contribution allowed here? Is the request allowed? A relevant explanation of a problem might still contain a prohibited product link or customer recruitment request. Removing the link may leave the underlying solicitation unchanged.

Use Buildside’s broader platform comparison to compare audience, stage, and publishing purpose. The narrower question here is whether your next contribution fits the documented participation context.

Context

Documented purpose or boundary

Decision before posting

Buildside public progress

Its About page describes SaaS progress sharing; guidelines support real work and learning.

Use a concrete build decision. Do not infer unlimited promotion from the stated purpose.

r/startups discussion or designated thread

Local rules distinguish ordinary discussion, startup sharing, and feedback requests.

Find the appropriate current thread and read its instructions; a standalone update may not qualify.

Show HN

A showcase for personally made, nontrivial work people can try; minor upgrades generally do not qualify.

Check readiness and current account access before preparing a demonstration.

MicroConf Connect

A private, vetted SaaS peer setting with boundaries around acquisition-driven participation.

Check access and the actual member/channel rules; it is not your public build history.

These are different contexts, not an overall ranking. The comparison does not measure moderation consistency, response quality, audience size, or customer acquisition.

What do the current official pages establish?

Buildside’s About page describes sharing product progress and finding collaborators. Its community guidelines support sharing real work and prohibit harassment and manipulation. Those statements support a progress-sharing use case. The accessible guidance does not establish a numerical promotion allowance. Buildside publishes this Journal and appears in this comparison; its inclusion is a disclosed editorial assessment.

The r/startups rules shown in its sidebar prohibit ordinary promotional posts, direct startup sharing to a designated thread, and route feedback requests to an appropriate thread. Ordinary submissions must avoid directly tying the discussion to the author’s project name or URL. Moderators decide whether something is promotional. The sidebar calls startup sharing monthly, while the highlighted thread is titled quarterly: follow the current destination and instructions rather than promising a fixed cadence.

The Show HN guidelines exclude landing pages and signup pages, ask makers to be available for discussion, and encourage easy access to the work. Eligibility is conditional. The public temporary restriction notice also asks unfamiliar participants to learn the community and contribute before posting an occasional showcase. It does not establish that every account is blocked.

Hacker News’s general guidelines additionally restrict primary promotional use, solicited engagement, and generated text; comments must not be AI-edited either. Do not treat a writing template or a qualifying product as permission to disregard those requirements.

MicroConf Connect’s official page describes private peer discussion, places partner members under a no-pitch standard, and excludes applicants whose primary goal is client acquisition. Applications were paused at this check. This describes positioning and access, not a verified copy of every internal channel rule. Confirm those rules before making a request.

Write a contribution-routing note

Before joining another community or drafting several versions, make one short note for the contribution itself. Use the same fields for each candidate. The aim is a decision you can explain later, not a numerical community score.

  • Work: What changed in the product, and what evidence can you safely show?

  • Reader: Who could usefully examine that work? Name the role or relevant experience.

  • Request: What exact action do you want: read, discuss, inspect a demo, try a task, or consider buying?

  • Destination: Which profile, thread, showcase, or channel would contain the contribution?

  • Permission: Which current official instruction covers the subject, product mention, link, and request?

  • Readiness and access: Does the work qualify now, and can you currently use that surface?

  • Visibility: What becomes public, and what information must remain private?

  • Decision and date: Post here, use a different permitted destination, ask for clarification, or hold. Save the supporting URL and check date.

Keep the permission field explicit. “Other founders posted links” is an observation about visible content. It is not a written exception for your request. “The post is educational” describes its value; it does not answer whether your product mention is allowed.

A useful note might conclude that the community is suitable for learning about onboarding but unsuitable for a named product announcement. That is a successful comparison. You have identified a valuable role without forcing every community to become a distribution channel.

If the request changes, review the note again. Asking readers to discuss a tradeoff and asking them to start a trial are different contributions even when the screenshot and opening paragraph stay the same. Review permissions before adding that final invitation.

A fictional example: one SaaS, several participation decisions

Imagine a fictional founder building a tool that helps small software teams inspect failed webhook deliveries. She has changed how an event’s retry history appears. She wants peers to understand the decision and wants relevant developers to examine the workflow. The product, founder, and situation below are invented; no posting or customer results are implied.

Keep the progress record in an appropriate public home

For her public build record, she explains the original confusion, shows a customer-safe example event, and describes why she separated delivery attempts from error details. She also names an unresolved limitation: the display still cannot explain failures caused outside her system. This is a concrete account of work rather than a claim that the interface solves every debugging problem.

She chooses a surface intended for product progress and checks its rules before including the product reference or link. The public record can explain her decision without requiring a signup. If she later learns that the labels are confusing, she can publish the correction where readers can recover the earlier context.

Separate product feedback from general discussion

In a community with separate startup-sharing and feedback destinations, she first decides which job matters. A request to inspect her interface belongs in the feedback destination if its current instructions permit it. A general discussion about how teams reason about retries is a different contribution. She does not disguise the interface request by removing the product name while keeping a route to the trial.

She prepares only the information required for that destination. She does not attach the same launch paragraph to every discussion or treat a request for private messages as a substitute for permission to recruit testers.

Reserve a showcase for work that qualifies

A small retry-history interface change would generally be a poor Show HN candidate. She would reconsider a showcase for a substantive, usable tool she personally built, subject to the current rules and access restrictions. She would write the submission herself and remain available to discuss the actual work. This article supplies a routing decision, not ready-to-post Hacker News copy.

Use private peer discussion for a different question

Her operating question might be whether to support teams that need extensive setup help. That calls for relevant peer experience and enough business context to examine the tradeoff. In an accessible private peer group, she would check the channel rules and ask about the decision rather than turn member access into a sales prospect list.

She would also remove customer identifiers and private messages. A private setting does not make other people’s information hers to share. Any later public lesson would describe her own decision without quoting the private exchange unless she had permission.

The work remains the same underlying product development. The contribution changes because each setting has a different purpose and permission boundary. Sometimes the right adaptation is a different request; sometimes it is postponing the post entirely.

What if permission is unclear?

Treat an unknown rule as a question to resolve. Read the current instructions and pinned notices, then ask the appropriate moderator or organizer about the specific destination and request. Avoid asking a vague question about whether “promotion” is allowed when you actually want permission to recruit trial users.

Reddit’s official spam guidance prohibits repeated or unsolicited mass engagement, recognizes community-specific rules, and directs uncertain participants toward clarification. A participation ratio does not override a local restriction. Nor does replacing a product URL with a profile invitation answer whether the underlying request is permitted.

Keep any clarification with your note and preserve its scope. Permission for one thread or event does not establish a permanent exception across the platform. If access is paused, wait or choose another suitable setting; do not plan around an unavailable membership.

Choose a community your public work can actually use

For continuing building in public, prioritize a place where your real decisions can be shared repeatedly in an appropriate format. Add a specialist discussion or launch surface when you have a separate qualifying contribution. You do not need every community to host the whole journey.

Before your next update, complete the routing note for one destination and one request. If the rules do not support that contribution, change the destination or hold it. Once permission is clear, the guide to writing useful build-in-public posts without sounding promotional can help improve the writing. Good community fit and useful writing each need their own check.

Questions founders ask next

Does a product link make an update promotional?

Consider the whole contribution: your relationship to the product, the request, and the destination’s rules. A link is only one part. Removing it does not make a trial invitation or customer recruitment request permissible.

Can I compare communities without joining them all?

You can compare their current published purposes, access requirements, and visible rules. Identify internal rules or actual discussion quality as unknown when you cannot inspect them. Do not present documentation analysis as firsthand membership experience.

What should I do after an update is removed?

Read the stated reason and relevant rule before deciding on a next step. Use the community’s clarification or appeal process where available. Keep the lesson in your routing note, and avoid reposting variations that preserve the same prohibited request.
